Global Risks Assessment Workshop
On 27 September, Marsh & McLennan Companies and the Global Risk Network brought together over 35 experts from Economic, Societal, Geopolitical and Environmental and Scientific domains to validate risk assessments by the Global Risk Network on the 23 major Global Risks pre-selected by the network, and to create conflationary risk scenarios which outline how the Global Risk environment may change. A follow-up meeting hosted by Swiss Re in London on 26 October will use these scenarios to think through possible mitigation structures and measures, with a view to presenting the work of the Global Risk Network in Davos.

The Global Risk Update 2007 report will be released in the run-up to the Annual Meeting in January 2007.

Industry Partnership Meeting
Addressing Global Risks: Disaster Risk Reduction
On 27 September, the Global Risk Network and the Financial Services community convened a cross-industry session on Disaster Risk Reduction, engaging strategists and CEO’s from 17 industries in a conversation about mitigating the effects of future natural catastrophe events. Following a panel discussion featuring the CEOs of CH2M Hill, Mercer Oliver Wyman, Vattenfall, and the Assistant Secretary for Infrastructure Protection from the US Department of Homeland Security, breakout conversations drew out a number of key challenges and opportunities for public-private collaboration in reducing important risks. The Disaster Risk Reduction project will be building on these conversations at the upcoming India Economic Summit in association with the Forum's Financial Services community, with the intention of synthesizing outcomes to date for presentation with the US government, World Bank, and industry partners at the Annual Meeting in Davos.

Brussels
In the run-up to the World Economic Forum in Turkey meeting on 23-24 November, the Global Risk Network engaged in a Europe@Risk workshop, following on from a workshop held in Istanbul in July. Over 30 experts from business, the European institutions and from Turkey discussed a range of topics - from Turkey's path to European Union accession, to demographic risk, to economic risk, to geopolitical and security risks. The purpose of the workshops is threefold: to assess the Global Risks to which Europe is exposed, to ask what Turkey's role in mitigating those risks may be and investigating how this role may be improved. The key is to move thinking on Europe's relationship with Turkey into the strategic framework of Global Risks, and to ask how Turkey's relationship with Europe can be transformed from one governed by perceived risks to one governed by perceived opportunities.

The Europe@Risk report will be published in the week preceding the World Economic Forum in Turkey meeting.
